Thoughts & Musings on 6x11 “Happily Ever After”

"I can't take you back, the Island isn't done with you yet"

Desmond episodes are normally some of the best and this is no exception. It really is a bit of a brain melter but probably the best of the season so far ...

  • Widmore took Desmond from the hospital where he was being treated after Ben shot him, he tells Desmon that Penny is okay
  • Widmore plans to test Desmond to see if he can survive a catastrophic electromagnetic event. He has survived one before, at the swam hatch. This leads to a very cool Dr Manhatten moment for Desmond.
  • The event pushes Desmond into the flashsideways universe. Here he is Widmores right hand man and is tasked with looking after Charlie, as Driveshaft are going to perform with Widmores sons band. Desmond looking after Charlie sort of echoes season 3 here.
  • Charlie introduces a new concept so far, that of love and finding that perfect love just as you're dieing. After crashing Desmonds car into the harbour, Desmond has flashes of our universe, of Charlie drowning and the 'Not Penny's Boat' message plus of more moments from his life, including Penny
  • Desmond is taken to a hospital where he is given an MRI, also an electromagnetic device, which triggers flashes again to our universe. It seems electromagnetism is a connection between the two worlds
  • Desmond goes to see Mrs Widmore, it is Eloise! What does she know? She seems to know something and warns Desmond not to keep looking for what he can't have, which is Penny
  • Very interesting convo between Desmond and Daniel, Daniel seems to know he has set off a nuclear device sometime and somewhere. The conversation heavily indicates that the devices detonation has created the flashsideways world
  • More moments of deja vu and similarity litter the episode, Desmond meeting Penny at the same stadium he trained at and where Jack met him
  • Desmond flashes back to our world, where he now readily offers to help Widmore. What does he now so easily understand that makes up change his mind so?
  • Sayid then grabs Desmond. Two questions, why does Sayid let Zoe live and why does Desmond follow him without question?
  • The minute he follows Sayid, Desmond flashes back to the alternate world and asks for a list of passengers on Oceanic 815, he wants to show them something. What is it? The same as Charlie showed him? Their path and part in all this?

I actually gave up trying to make any kind of notes half way through the episode and haven't had time to rewatch, so the above is probably missing a lot of stuff that actually went on. It certainly seems to be clearing up what the flashsideways are anyway.
